What is a toner?
If you're here, you've probably been told a thousand times that toner is ‘step two of the routine’ and little more. But if you only apply it because you have to, you're missing out on its full potential!
Toner is a liquid product, usually watery in texture, that is applied right after cleansing to balance the skin's pH and prepare it to better absorb what comes next. So far, so good. But at K-beauty, a toner isn't just that: it's the step that makes the difference between a routine that simply moisturises and one that transforms the skin.
Korean toners are alcohol-free, non-drying and non-stinging. Quite the opposite: they're formulated to help moisturise, soothe, calm, soften and leave skin feeling instantly comfortable. They're so pleasant you'll want to apply them more than once.
What is toner for in K-beauty routine?
A good Korean toner does more than just refresh. Its main mission is to get your skin ready to make the most of the products that follow. How? It helps to hydrate the surface, relaxes the skin barrier and leaves the skin slightly moisturised, making it easier for the serum, essence or cream to be absorbed. Think of it this way: when a sponge is dry, it hardly absorbs at all. But if it's slightly wet, it absorbs much better. Your skin works the same way.
In addition, there are specific tonics for different needs: exfoliating, soothing, sebum-regulating, firming... Therefore, choosing the right one for your skin type can make all the difference.
Benefits of using a facial toner
The best thing about toner is that it has both short-term and long-term effects if you use it right. These are just some of its benefits:
- More moisture from the first touch.
- Soothes the skin after cleansing, especially if you use lime water or a more intense cleanser.
- Helps balance pH, which can be altered when washing your face.
- Improves the efficacy of your entire routine: your favourite actives penetrate better and work harder.
Tip! If your skin feels tight after cleansing, a good toner may be the only thing you're missing.
How to apply a tonic properly?
Although it may seem like a simple step, the way you apply it also matters. You can do it with your hands, pouring a few drops directly and pressing gently with your palms on your face. It's the most efficient, skin-friendly and zero-waste way. You can also use a cotton pad if you prefer a more refreshing sensation or if you want to remove any makeup or dirt left behind after cleansing.
Extra tip: in summer, keep your toner in the fridge. It becomes your best ally to lower the temperature of your face, reduce inflammation and start your routine with a refreshing moment of pleasure.
Best ingredients in a Korean toner
Korean cosmetics are known for formulating products with functional ingredients that take care of your skin from the very first step. In the case of toners, some of the most interesting ones are:
- Hyaluronic acid: one of the best moisturising active ingredients. It attracts water and helps to keep the skin juicy.
- Centella Asiatica: helps to soothe, regenerate and reduce redness. Ideal if your skin is sensitive or reactive.
- Niacinamide: evens tone, regulates sebum and improves texture. It is one of the most complete and gentle ingredients.
- AHA and BHA: exfoliate the skin without friction. Removes dead cells, refines pores and prevents spots.
Every skin is different, which is why Korean toners offers the one that fits your skin. There are options for every need: from the most moisturising for dry skin, to purifying for oily skin or soothing for sensitive skin. Whatever your case, there's a toner for you. And once you incorporate it, you won't want to skip it.
